Dimitris Lainis is the central character of Eteros Ego (The Other Me), a complex crime film realised in 2016 which has inspired a two-season TV series (the first season, Lost Souls, was released by Cosmote TV in 2019; the second one, Katharsis, is expected to be released during 2020). Lainis is a professor of Criminology at the University of Athens in his late thirties; he is an extremely intelligent person but suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, which affects his relationships on both a personal and a professional level. In this sense, the figure of Dimitris Lainis is modelled on the type of the “autistic detective” (Loftis 2014), first introduced by Arthur Conan Doyle with the character of Sherlock Holmes, which represents a sort of paradigm for many of contemporary fictional detectives, such as the protagonist of the Swedish/ Danish TV series Bron/ Broen, Saga Noren. Lainis is a loner, a very shy and socially awkward person; nevertheless, in the film as well as in the TV series, he engages in a platonic relationship with a girl, who appreciates his sensitivity and awkwardness. In the end, these particular psychological features, combined with his genius and deep knowledges, make Lainis understand the unbalanced criminal mind and help him detect the killer.
