Case study rationale
Boulevard du Palais is a crime fiction series TV created by Marie Guilmineau and distribute by France 2 that lasted from 1999 to 2017, based on two novels by Thierry Jonquet, Les Orpailleurs (1993) and Moloch (1998). The main character Nadia Lintz, played by Anne Richard, is an investigating judge (in French “juge d’instruction”), alongside with Commandant Rovère, played by Jean-François Balmer. In the series, the characters’ professional and private lives are interwoven : Lintz, at the beginning of the series, investigates a crime related to World War II, and spoliation of Jewish Property by nazis and French population (as her own father did). Her character embodies the urban heterosexual female, professionnally powerful but personnally experiencing loneliness. According to the realism of Jonquet’s novels, Nadia Lintz appears as a “human” and “accessible” character (Jost, 2001): her friendship with Rovère, her family ruptures, her quest for love and happiness make her accessible. Sarah Sepulchre told that groups of characters allow female character to access central positions in fiction. Actually, Nadia Lintz is deeply related to Commandant Rovère, a male character. Rovère appears as human but also embodies the traditional “hardboiled guy”: he is an alcoholic because of deep familial difficulties and frequently is in opposition to his hierarchy, but he’s also faithful to Nadia.
